Hanover’s Madison Kiwanis Invitational Highlights Cross Country Weekend
September 8, 2005
Four of the eight HCAC cross country teams will be competing at the Hanover Madison Kiwanis Invitational on Saturday. Joining Hanover at the meet will be Anderson, Bluffton, and Franklin. Anderson placed first on the men’s side last year at the annual event, and the Anderson women’s team was the highest placing HCAC team with a second-place finish.
The meet will be the first of the season for Anderson. The Ravens did not compete last week and will look to a strong team of runners to secure another title. Leading the way for the Ravens this season will be junior Stephen Cohen ( Roselawn, Ind./North Newton) and senior Kyle Weller ( Eaton, Ohio/Eaton) on the men’s side. The women will be led by five all-HCAC returnees including defending conference champion Gwen Kemple ( Rushville, Ind./Rushville).
Hanover is coming off a solid showing at the Franklin Invitational last weekend. Senior Leah Peelman ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marian) captured the individual title on the women’s side and will look for back-to-back wins. Peelman won the Madison Kiwanis Invitational last season in a time of 18:55.5. The men will be led by junior Mike Sullivan (New Palestine, Ind./Scecina) who finished third last week in the 8K Franklin Invitational.
Bluffton had a good performance by both the men’s and women’s teams at the Tiffin/Heidelberg Invitational last weekend. The men placed seventh and the women finished third in the team standings. Leading the way for the Beavers were senior Jennifer Craemer ( Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) and sophomore Sarah Humphrey ( Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) on the women’s side. Craemer placed seventh and Humphrey finished eighth. Senior Dan Rosebrock (Napoleon, Ohio/Napoleon) finished fourth overall to lead the men last week.
Franklin ’s women’s team will enter the Madison Kiwanis Invitational looking for its second consecutive team victory. The Grizzlies won the Franklin Invitational last weekend. Senior Robyn Burns ( Greenwood, Ind./Roncalli) and freshman Lauren Patterson ( Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) placed second and third, respectively, guiding the team to the win. Freshman Brandon Welti ( Sunman, Ind./ Milan) won the men’s race last week helping the men’s team to a second place finish. All three runners should be in contention for the win this weekend.
Defiance will also be hosting an invitational this Saturday. Manchester will be the lone HCAC team joining the Yellow Jackets at the meet.
Defiance competed at the Tiffin/Heidelberg last weekend where both the men’s and women’s teams finished sixth overall. Senior Tom Habenicht ( North Ridgville, Ohio/North Ridgeville) led the men with a 21st finish overall. Junior Stacey Hall ( Fremont, Ohio/Fremont Ross) guided the women’s team with a ninth-place finish.
Both the men’s and women’s teams for Manchester posted strong showings at the Franklin Invitational last weekend and they will look to carry that over into the Defiance meet this weekend. The men finished first at Franklin behind junior Josh Nifong’s ( Etna Green, Ind./Triton) fourth place finish. Sophomore Rebecca Flanders ( Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) placed fourth on the women’s side.
Mount St. Joseph will be visiting the Division II Northern Kentucky Invitational on Friday evening. The Lions are coming off a successful run at the Tiffin/Heidelberg Invitational. The men did not receive a team score, but the women placed fifth at the event. Leading the way was senior Christine Kirchner ( Wauconda, Ill./ Carmel) who placed 11th overall for the women.
