Franklin Evens Record, Faces Three Rivals This Week

Franklin College ’s men’s soccer team evened its 2005 overall record by defeating Taylor-Fort Wayne on Sept. 20. The win tops the Grizzlies win total (3) of a year ago and gives them the most wins in the conference this season. Franklin will look to continue its strong play when it plays three in-state rivals this week.

The Grizzlies (4-4) have won three straight matches and will travel to DePauw on Sept. 24 looking to make it four straight. Following the meeting with the Tigers, Franklin will host Rose-Hulman on Sept. 25 and Earlham on Sept. 28. Rose-Hulman is currently ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region. Franklin has been led by junior Andy Pickett ( Sheridan, Ind./Sheridan), sophomore Rob Bush ( Vincennes, Ind./ Lincoln), and freshman Michael Harwood ( South Bend, Ind./ Adams). Each player has three goals this season. Senior goalkeeper T.J. Davis ( Franklin, Ind./ Lejeune, N.C.) has been instrumental in goal and ranks 13th in the nation in saves per match (9.29).

Bluffton improved to 3-4 on the young season with a 1-0 win against Cincinnati Bible on Wednesday. Senior defender Thomas Dunn ( Dalton, Ohio/Central Christian) netted the contest’s only goal. The win was the second straight for Bluffton. The Beavers will look to continue their run at Marietta on Sept. 24 and at Lake Erie on Sept. 28. Sophomore forward Tyler Chapman ( Shreve, Ohio/Triway) leads Bluffton with four goals and two assists this season. He is among conference leaders in both categories.

Transylvania (2-3-2) fell to visiting Maryville on Wednesday, 4-1. The loss was the Pioneers’ third in their last four games. The Pioneers will look to return to the win column at Muskingum on Sept. 24. Junior goalkeeper Marc Frank ( Lexington, Ky.) has been solid in the net for Transy. Frank has allowed just three goals this season and boasts a 0.61 goals against average. Sophomore defender Matt Vogel ( Lexington, Ky.) has two goals to lead the team.

Anderson (2-6-1) has dropped three straight matches including a 3-1 decision at Rose-Hulman on Wednesday. The Ravens host Otterbein on Sept. 24 and travel to Denison on Sept. 28. Junior midfielder Tyler Hussey ( Indianapolis, Ind./ Southport) has been effective with three goals and two assists to lead the team. In all, seven different players have scored for the Ravens this season.

Defiance (2-5-0) will host its fourth straight home match when Baldwin-Wallace visits on Sept. 24 and fifth straight when Otterbein comes to town on Sept. 28. The Yellow Jackets are 1-2 on their current homestand having dropped the last two matches to Heidelberg and Tri-State. Senior goalkeeper Jeff Meyer ( Amelia, Ohio/Amelia) is having another good season in goal for the Yellow Jackets. He is currently ranked 12th in the nation in saves per match (9.33). Sophomore Karl Eustache ( Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes) leads the team with three goals and an assist.

Manchester (1-5-2) is being paced by sophomore forward Brian Huss ( Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central). He is among league leaders in goals (3) and assists (4). Freshman midfielder Chris Rowe ( Belleville, Mich./ Belleville) is also having a solid rookie campaign with three goals and two assists. The Spartans, however, have lost two straight matches and five of their last six. Manchester will look to snap the current streak at Rose-Hulman on Sept. 24 and at Taylor-Fort Wayne on Sept. 27.

Hanover (1-5-1) picked up its first win of the year by defeating visiting Georgetown Sept. 20, 3-2, in overtime. The Panthers’ received the game-winning goal by freshman Kyle Laker ( Oldenburg, Ind./Batesville) off a ricochet. The goal was the first for Laker this season. The other two goals scored for the Panthers were by freshman Shane Henshaw ( Shelbyville, Ky./Shelbyville) and junior Seamus O’Rourke ( Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger). The win snapped a three-match losing streak for the Panthers. Hanover will look to build on the win against visiting Case Western Reserve on Sept. 24 and against visiting Wabash on Sept. 27.

The College of Mount St. Joseph, in its first year, is still looking for its first win after dropping two tough matches last week. The Lions will host Capital on Sept. 23 and Centre on Sept. 25 before traveling to Asbury on Sept. 28. The Lions have had four different players tally goals for them this season and freshman goalkeeper Austin Campbell ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) has a 2.84 goals against average this season.
