Transylvania to host the Glenn Hyundai Showcase on Saturday and Sunday

September 8, 2005

Transylvania will be hosting the Glenn Hyundai Showcase at Thomas Field in Lexington, Ky. The Pioneers will play host to Hanover, Monroe, and Baldwin-Wallace. There will also be four women’s teams represented at the event.

The Pioneers’ men’s soccer team has started off where it finished last season. Transy has been strong on defense allowing for a 1-0-1 start to the season. The Pioneers, behind goalkeepers Marc Frank (Jr., Lexington, Ky.) and Nick Karaffa (Sr., New Albany, Ind.), have not allowed a goal. Transylvania allowed just 11 goals in 20 matches last season and is looking to keep the same terrific defensive standard. Transylvania battled Campbellsville to a double-overtime tie last week before toppling Spalding 3-0 on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Rossetter ( Speedway, Ind.) was named HCAC Player-of-the-Week after picking up a goal and assist in the win. The Pioneers will look to stay unbeaten when they host Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday and face Monroe on Sunday.

Hanover (0-2-1) will also be participating in the showcase. The Panthers will meet Monroe on Saturday and play Baldwin-Wallace on Sunday. Hanover battled Marian to a scoreless double-overtime tie in its’ last contest on Wednesday. The Panthers have not notched a goal in three games this season, but will look to find the net this weekend.

Anderson (1-1-1) is unbeaten after dropping the season-opener to Calvin, 4-1. The Ravens have since defeated Urbana, 1-0, and tied Davenport, 1-1. Junior Tyler Hussey ( Indianapolis, Ind./Southport) has scored two of Anderson’s three goals this season and ranks second in the conference in that category. The Ravens will travel to Ohio Northern for a pair of matches against the host and Heidelberg this weekend before visiting Earlham on Wednesday. Anderson fell to Earlham, 2-1, and to Ohio Northern, 3-1, last season.

Defiance will also be traveling to Ohio Northern for a pair of matches this weekend. The Yellow Jackets will square off with Heidelberg on Friday afternoon and play host Ohio Northern on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets were shut out by both teams a year ago with Ohio Northern escaping with a 2-0 win and Heidelberg taking a 1-0 victory. Defiance will follow the weekend action with a trip to Taylor on Tuesday before returning home on Wednesday to face Adrian. The Yellow Jackets’ are 1-1 on the year following an exciting 2-1 win over Oberlin on Sunday. Sophomore Karl Eustache ( Millersburg, Ohio/West Holmes) provided the game-winner in the 84 th minute.

Franklin (1-2) will look to even its’ season record when hosting Maryville on Saturday. The Grizzlies are coming off a 7-1 loss at the hands of the University of Indianapolis on Wednesday. Franklin picked up its’ lone win of the year on Saturday in a 3-2 double overtime win over Huntington. Junior forward Andy Pickett ( Sheridan, Ind./Sheridan) scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime to provide the winning margin. Following the contest with Maryville, Franklin will host Asbury on Tuesday.

Bluffton also sits with a 1-2 overall mark following its first win of the season on Tuesday. The Beavers defeated Huntington, 1-0, in overtime. Freshman forward Drew Hoening ( Beavercreek, Ohio/Christian Academy) netted the game-winner in the first overtime for the Beavers. The win came on the heels of two tough 3-2 losses at the Manchester Tournament over the weekend. Sophomore Tyler Chapman ( Shreve, Ohio/Triway) led the way with three goals. He leads the conference in goals scored and points this season. The Beavers will host Bethel on Saturday in their only action of the week.

Manchester started the year with two ties and then dropped a tough overtime decision to Adrian to currently sit at 0-1-2 this season. The Spartans will be looking for their first win of the year when they host Oberlin on Saturday. They will then travel to Ohio Northern on Tuesday. Sophomore forward Brian Huss ( Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) has had a great start to the season and has posted two goals and three assists in three matches.

Mount St. Joseph , in its first season with a men’s soccer program, picked up its’ first tie with a 1-1 double-overtime affair at Thomas More on Wednesday. The Lions are now 0-2-1 on the season. Junior Evan Rogers ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Elder), freshman Robert Huesman ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) and freshman Ben Denier ( Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) have each scored a goal for the Lions this season. The Mount will look to pick up its first-ever win when it travels to Cedarville on Friday. The match is the Lions only action this week.
