Manchester Looks to Stay Unbeaten at Kenyon, vs. Goshen

The Manchester women’s soccer team has jumped out to a 3-0 overall mark this season and will try to remain unbeaten when it travels to Kenyon on Saturday and hosts Goshen Wednesday. The Spartans captured the Mount Union Tournament title by topping Wooster, 1-0, and host Mount Union, 5-2 over the weekend. They won their season opener last Thursday with a 2-1 win over visiting Huntington.

Senior Missy King ( South Bend, Ind./Riley), last season’s HCAC Player of the Year, is out to another outstanding start. King has netted three goals. She has made a goal in each of the three wins and has scored two game-winners. Teammate Miranda Ford (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) has posted two goals in three games.

Manchester is currently ranked seventh in the region according to the NSCAA/addidas rankings.

Transylvania will also be looking to continue its solid start to the year. The Pioneers are also unbeaten, 2-0, and will put their record on the line at Cumberland this afternoon before hosting Baldwin-Wallace and LaVerne in the Glenn Hyundai Showcase this weekend. They will cap a busy week by hosting Wilmington on Wednesday. Freshman forward Brittany Farris ( Louisville, Ky.) scored two goals in the Pioneers’ 3-0 win over Adrian and leads the team in points this season.

Anderson (2-1-0) has won two straight matches after being shutout, 3-0, in the season opener against Thomas More. The Ravens have defeated Shawnee St., 1-0, and Davenport, 7-0 in the past week. Freshmen Ruthie Castor ( Columbus, Ohio/ Worthington) and Aubrey Shanks ( Plymouth, Ind./ Plymouth) have each netted two goals to lead the team this season. Anderson will travel to Ohio Northern on Saturday and host Taylor on Tuesday.

Franklin (1-2-0) picked up its first win on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over visiting St. Mary-of-the-Woods. The Grizzlies were led by senior Meghann Disch ( Aurora, Ind./South Dearborn) who posted a hat trick in the contest. The Grizzlies will look to build on the win when they host Maryville on Saturday and Earlham on Wednesday.

Mount St. Joseph (1-2-0) has dropped two tough matches after opening the season with a 1-0 victory over John Carroll University. The Lions have fallen to Case Western in double overtime, 1-0, and to Thomas More, 1-0, in their last two matches. Junior Jessey Spradlin ( Cincinnati, Ohio/Northwest) has scored the Lions’ lone goal this season. The Mount will look to even its record this season at Wilmington on Saturday. Wilmington is currently ranked third in the region. The Lions will also host Oberlin on Sunday and Wittenberg on Wednesday.

Defiance has started the season 0-2-1 with the tie coming against Oberlin last Saturday. Senior Emily Armstrong ( West Alexandria, Ohio/Eaton) has scored Defiance’s lone goal this season. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Sutter ( Hamilton, Ohio/Talawanda) has been solid in the net this year. She is ranked 17th in the country in saves by averaging 12 per match. The Yellow Jackets will be looking to get in the win column when they host Ohio Wesleyan on Tuesday.

Hanover (0-2-0) will host Thomas More this afternoon, travel to St. Mary-of-the-Woods on Monday, and host Marian on Wednesday looking to flip its’ record. The Panthers dropped a 2-0 decision to St. Francis and a 2-1 decision to Spalding over the weekend. Sophomore Ashley Crays ( Cicero, Ind./ Hamilton Heights) scored the Panthers’ goal against Spalding.

Bluffton will host Lake Erie this afternoon in its first action of the year. The Beavers will then host Bethel on Saturday and travel to Urbana on Wednesday.
