Franklin , Manchester to Lockup this Weekend

September 8, 2005

A head-to-head matchup between perennial conference contenders Franklin and Manchester will highlight a weekend chalk full of conference women’s tennis competition. Franklin will enter the matchup with a 2-0 conference record having defeated Defiance, 8-1, and Mount St. Joseph, 9-0, last weekend. Manchester picked up a 9-0 win over Anderson to enter the weekend 1-0 in conference competition.

Transylvania will host the competitive tri-meet looking to improve its 1-1 conference record as well against the two traditional conference powers.

Franklin (2-0 overall, 2-0 HCAC) is led by No. 1 singles player Leslie McAleese (Jr., Terre Haute, Ind./West Vigo) and No. 2 singles player Rachel Phillips (So., Indianapolis, Ind./Warren Central). McAleese is 2-1 this season, with her lone defeat coming against Defiance’s Emily Meyer at No. 1 singles. Phillips is 3-0 on the year.

Manchester (3-0 overall, 1-0 HCAC) has been tested in tough non-conference matches this season against Grace and Earlham. The Spartans are led by senior Elizabeth Weybright ( Syracuse, Ind./ Fairfield), freshman Milogros Ridoutt ( Warsaw, Ind./ Warsaw), and freshman Christa Hunter ( New Haven, Ind./ New Haven). Weybright is 4-2 overall and 2-1 at No. 1 singles. Hunter and Ridoutt are each 6-0 this season and 3-0 each at No. 3 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Transylvania (1-1 overall, 1-1 HCAC) picked up a conference win against Bluffton and dropped a head-to-head matchup against Hanover last weekend. The Pioneers were led by junior Jessica Hanson ( Lexington, Ky.) who was 2-2 overall and 1-1 each at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

The second conference tri-meet of the weekend will be held at Mount St. Joseph and will feature the host, Hanover, and Anderson.

Hanover enters the matchups tied for first in the HCAC at 2-0. The Panthers, 2-0 overall as well, picked up team wins over Bluffton and Transylvania last weekend. No one on the Panthers’ roster dropped a match last weekend.

Anderson fell to Manchester last weekend, 9-0, but topped Earlham 5-4. The Ravens are 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the HCAC. They will look to improve on both records at the tri-meet. Sophomore Rachel Makin ( Wabash, Ind./Southwood) and junior Kay Worden ( Craigville, Ind./Norwell) enter the weekend with the best overall records for the Ravens. Each player is 2-2 this season. Makin was playing No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles last weekend, while Worden picked up wins at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Mount St. Joseph fell to Defiance and Franklin last weekend, both by 9-0 scores. The Lions will try to pick up a win this weekend behind No. 1 singles player Ellen Shaver (So., Hamilton, Ohio/Hamilton Badin).

Bluffton (0-3 overall, 0-2 HCAC) and Defiance (2-1 overall, 1-1 HCAC) will meet for a conference head-to-head match on Tuesday.
