Defiance's Matuszak Finishes Second at Indoor Championships

March 14, 2008 (Defiance Release)

ADA, OhioSenior Trevor Matuszak threw nearly four feet farther than his previous personal-best to finish second in the men’s weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championship meet. Matuszak is set to become Defiance’s seventh track & field All-American when the official list is announced on Sunday evening.

The Ottawa Lake, Mich. native threw 62-02.25 on his second throw of the day, giving him the lead after the first two throws and breaking his own record of 58-11.25. However, Noah Gauthier of Bates College would eventually take over that lead with a toss of 63-01.25 and claim the individual crown.

“I knew I needed to make a big throw to be competitive, but I knew I had it in me. All my work this season has been setting me up for this moment,” Matuszak said. It’s been a humbling experience to be here, every athlete here is just as good as anyone else. I’m just glad I had the opportunity to be apart of such an event, it has been a great experience.”

The likely All-American status will add to the growing list of accolades that Matuszak has garnered this season. He won the All-Ohio Indoor Championships on February 16 with championship record throw of 58-11.25, while also topping the HCAC list after having thrown nearly 13 feet farther than his nearest competitor.

Matuszak earned eight team points for DC, putting the Jackets in a tie for third place through two events.

Matuszak and the Jackets will open the outdoor season on March 21, when they will host the Dick Small Invitational with the first events beginning at 10:00 a.m.
