ANDERSON, IN - Anderson University swept both the men and women titles last year at the HCAC Track and Field championships. The Ravens held off the rest of the HCAC competition in the men’s and women’s meet, scoring 201.33 points on the men’s side and a record 261 points on the women. The Rose-Hulman men came in second with a 149 point effort, while the Manchester women followed AU with 133 points.
The Anderson men will hope to get a repeat performance from senior distance runner Sean Hudson (Shelbyville, Ind./H.S.). Hudson won the 1,500 meters and finished second in the 5,000 meters at last year’s championship, recording times of 3:58.13 and 15:46.74 respectively. The senior currently holds the HCAC best time in both of those events this spring.
The Raven women’s track team is anchored by a sprinter and a distance runner who captured titles in last year’s championship. Senior sprinter Amanda Nagy (Wickliffe, OH/H.S.) won the 100 meters and 200 meters in last year’s meet. Nagy won the 100 meters in a time of 12.42 and the 200 meters in a time of 26.28. Nagy was also part of the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 winning relay teams. Senior distance runner Gwen Kemple (Rushville, Ind./H.S.) won the 5,000 meters and finished second in the 10,000 respectively in last year’s championships, and will return this weekend looking for a repeat performance. Nagy and Kemple each hold the conference best mark in their respective events.
Anderson not only gets the job done on the track, but they also receive great performances in their field events. Jumper Michelle Roth (Milwaukee, WI/Lutheran) holds the conference best mark this spring in the long jump and triple jump, while Brett Sears (Fortville, Ind./ Mount Vernon) holds the mark in the hammer throw. The Anderson men look to get points from high jumper Ryan Fultz (Knightstown, IN/H.S.) and long jumper Josh Randolph (Gary, Ind./ Valparaiso) who have both placed outdoor conference best marks this season.
Rose-Hulman will look to dethrone the Anderson men this weekend as the Engineers enter the meet ranked No. 25 in the latest NCAA Division III Coaches Power Rankings.
The Engineers have received conference best marks from four different athletes this spring and hold the conference best times in both relays.
Anderson has won 13 straight HCAC men’s track championships dating back to 1994 when Wabash earned the conference track title. The Raven women will look to claim their fourth straight crown.
The 2008 HCAC championships will be held at Anderson University on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26.
