Franklin’s Welti, Rose-Hulman’s Reives Named HCAC Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Year

2008 All-HCAC Men's Track Team

ANDERSON , IN – Franklin College’s Brandon Welti (Sunman, Ind./ Milan) and Rose-Hulman’s Thomas Reives (Indianapolis, Ind./Tech) have been named 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year, respectively. Reives helped the Engineers to the school’s first ever HCAC Men’s Track & Field Championship, while Welti led the Grizzlies to a fourth place finish on April 25-26 at Anderson University.

Welti, a junior for the Grizzlies, won two events at the 2008 HCAC Championships. The junior distance runner claimed the 5,000 meter run and the 10,000 meter run. Welti won the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:20.81 and took the 10,000 meter title with a time of 32:46.94.

Reives, a senior for the Engineers, set a new conference meet record in the triple jump. He had a winning mark of 14.17 meters and has qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III national championships. Reives also claimed the title in the long jump and finished fourth in the high jump. The senior won the long jump with a mark of 6.85 meters and placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 1.97 meters.

Also receiving recognition for his efforts at the meet is Defiance freshman Austin Trivett (Defiance, Ohio/H.S.). Trivett has been named the 2008 HCAC Track and Field Male Freshman Athlete of the Year. He placed in the top five in three events at the meet. The DC freshman placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.20 meters and finished fifth in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.94 meters. He also placed fifth in the 110 meter hurdles, finishing in a time of 16.33.

Rose-Hulman’s Larry Cole was named the HCAC Coach of the Year after leading the Engineers to the school’s first ever HCAC Men’s Track & Field team title. Cole, in his fifth season as Rose-Hulman’s head coach, helped RHIT snap Anderson’s thirteen consecutive men’s track & field conference championships. The team garnered 199 points to hold off the Ravens’ 193 point effort.
