Matuszak Earns Runner-Up Finish at NCAA Championships

OSHKOSH, Wisc.– Trevor Matuszak earned a second-place finish in the hammer throw at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships on May 23. He became Defiance’s eighth track & field All-American.
The Ottawa Lake, Mich. native threw 189-03.00 feet in his first throw of finals to take the lead after the first five throws. St. Thomas’ Mark O’Connell threw 191-00.00 on his final attempt to claim the individual crown.
Matuszak earns All-American status for the second time this season, after finishing second in the weight throw at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships. He broke the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships record in the hammer throw with a toss of 183-10, winning the event for the second year in a row. The senior also repeated as the HCAC Champion, throwing 193-06.00 at the 2008 HCAC Championships. Matuszak still owns the top hammer throw mark on the 2008 Div. III performance list, throwing 196-06.00 at the Billy Hayes Invitational.
