Transylvania Claims Second Straight HCAC Men’s Golf Championship

FORT WAYNE , IN – Transylvania University’s Bradley Sutherland (Cadiz, Ky.) fired a four-round score of 297 at the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Men’s Golf Conference Championship at Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour, Ind. and Chestnut Hills Golf Club in Ft. Wayne, Ind. to lead the Pioneers to their second straight HCAC Men’s Golf title. Transylvania tallied a team-score of 1,216, holding off second place Franklin’s total of 1,277.

Sutherland shot a first-round best 72 and returned in the final three rounds to shoot a 74, 75, and 76. He earned medalist honors at the tournament and has been named the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player. Sutherland finished ten strokes ahead of Tyler Daniels (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont) of Anderson.

Justin Ridge (Sullivan, Ind./H.S.) of Franklin, the HCAC Championship defending champion, finished 22 shots off the lead in ninth position. The sophomore finished with a four-day total of 319.

Transylvania received outstanding outings from all five of their golfers, placing all in the top eight. Corey Maggard (London, Ky.) finished 11 shots back of Sutherland with a 308 with Matthew Martin (Winchester, Ky.) finishing fourth with a total of 312.

Sutherland, Daniels, Maggard, and Martin all earned All-HCAC recognition. Joining the group on the All-HCAC team are Transylvania University’s Greg Turcotte (Sr., West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Alex Rechtin (Sr., Villa Hills, Ky.) and Franklin College’s Erik Whitaker (Fr., Coatesville, Ind./North Putnam) and Joey Dwenger (Fr., Greensburg, Ind./North Decatur).

Franklin finished second behind the Pioneers with a team score of 1,277. Anderson placed third as a team with a total of 1,283. Manchester tallied 1,332 team points for fourth place and was trailed by Rose-Hulman (1,335), Hanover (1,339), Defiance (1,355), and Mount St. Joseph (1,376).

Transylvania head coach Brian Lane was also honored by the HCAC and named Coach of the Year. Lane earned the honor for the second time after leading the Pioneers to their second straight HCAC men’s golf championship.
