Rose-Hulman Remains Unbeaten in HCAC Play with Win at Defiance

DEFIANCE, OH - Rose-Hulman (6-1, 4-0 HCAC) improved to 6-1 on the season and remained in first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football standings with a 28-21 victory at Defiance (0-6, 0-3 HCAC) Saturday.

Junior Derek Eitel (Marshall , Ill. /H.S.) led the Rose-Hulman offense with 236 yards passing, completing 17 of his 29 passes for two touchdowns. Junior Calvin Bueltel (Huntingburg , Ind. /Southridge) added his fourth consecutive 100-yard rushing game with 128 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries for the balanced offense.

Rose receiver Nate Richter (Zionsville , Ind. /H.S.) became the seventh wide receiver in school history to cross 100 catches in his career, catching six balls for 57 yards and a score.

Defiance 's Lewis Caralla (Tampa , Fla. / East Lake ) turned in his best performance of the season with 188 rushing yards on only 18 carries. Freshman quarterback Rick Powell (Rochester , Mich. /Cousino) completed 11 passes for 117 yards and two touchdowns to lead the DC passing attack.

The two teams finished nearly even in every statistical category. Defiance piled up a season-best 393 total yards of offense on 62 plays and held the ball for 29 minutes and 49 seconds. The Engineers countered with 387 total yards of offense on 68 plays and recorded 30 minutes and 11 seconds of possession.

Rose-Hulman will look to remain spotless in conference action next weekend against Bluffton before a crucial November 1 showdown at Franklin . Defiance welcomes Anderson to Coressel Stadium next weekend in search of their first win of the season.

Manchester earned a 17-7 win at Bluffton to move to 4-2 on the season. The Spartans (4-2, 2-1 HCAC) established a successful running game early to defeat the Beavers. Junior running back Brandon Wells (Woodburn , Ind. /Woodlan) capped off a nine play drive late in the first quarter with a one yard touchdown, giving the black and gold an early 7-0 advantage. Bluffton (1-5, 0-3 HCAC) answered midway through the second quarter on a Brock Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) touchdown run, tying the score 7-7 at the half. Manchester added a field goal during the third quarter and Wells scored his second touchdown on the day midway through the fourth quarter, giving the Spartans the 10 point win. Wells finished his day with 92 yards and two scores on 23 carries. Junior quarterback Caleb Grimes (South Haven, Mich./H.S.) was an efficient 17 of 20 for 140 yards and an interception. Manchester returns home to face Hanover next weekend, while Bluffton travels to HCAC front-runner Rose-Hulman.

Mount St. Joseph (4-2, 2-2 HCAC) set a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference record with seven interceptions and knocked off Hanover (0-5, 0-3 HCAC) 37-19 at L.S. Ayres Field. The Lions were outgained by Hanover 484-474 during the contest, but Hanover quarterback Nick Sharp (Indianapolis , Ind. /Franklin Central) was picked off seven times among his 69 attempts. The Mount took advantage of the Panther miscues, scoring 17 first half points off HC turnovers. MSJ held a 23-0 lead at the half before Sharp started finding a rhythm in the passing game. The freshman quarterback finished 41 of 69 for 476 yards and two touchdowns. Senior receiver Tyler Thiems (Indianapolis , Ind. /North Central) continued his impressive senior season with 13 more catches for 174 yards. Mount St. Joseph used a balanced offensive attack during the win. Sophomore running back Jake Davis (Cincinnati , Ohio / Anderson ) scored twice and tallied 118 yards on 18 carries to lead the rushing game. Senior quarterback Vince Palmer (Cincinnati , Ohio / Anderson ) completed 20 of his 33 attempts for 261 yards and two scores. Tim Meiner (Hamilton , Ohio /Talawanda) caught five passes for 96 yards and a touchdown to lead all Mount receivers. Senior defensive back Nick Yahl (St. Mary's, Ohio/Memorial) led the defensive effort, picking off Sharp three times on the afternoon. The Lions will return to Cincinnati for a very important showdown with Franklin Saturday afternoon. Hanover travels to Manchester Saturday in search for their first win of the season.

Anderson (3-3, 2-1 HCAC) suffered its first HCAC loss of the season, falling to No. 26 Franklin 56-27 at Macholtz Stadium on the Raven's Homecoming weekend. The Grizzlies (5-1, 3-0 HCAC) offense clicked, totaling 477 total yards and 432 passing yards during the win. Senior quarterback Chad Rupp (Evansville , Ind. /Memorial) completed 26 of his 37 attempts for 398 yards and a season-high six touchdowns. Senior receivers Logan Deffner (Greenwood , Ind. /Center Grove) and Tony Gregory (Indianapolis , Ind. /Ritter) each caught five passes for over 100 yards and a touchdown against the Ravens secondary. Darryl Stott (Union City , Ind. /H.S.) led the Ravens with 107 yards rushing and a touchdown on a career-high 33 carries. Quarterback Mitch Grider (Brookville, Ind./Franklin Co.) finished the game 18 of 35 for a career-high 212 yards and two touchdowns. Anderson kicker Tristan Cork (Indianapolis , Ind. /Heritage Christian) booted a school-record 51 yard field goal in the loss. The Grizzlies remain on the road next weekend against Mount St. Joseph , while the Ravens travel to winless Defiance .
