Rose-Hulman's Rhys Evans Named HCAC Men's Soccer MVP

GREENWOOD , IN - Rose-Hulman's Rhys Evans (Lake Bluff , Ill. / Lake Forest ) has been named the 2008 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player. Evans guided the Engineers to their first ever HCAC men's soccer Championship with a 7-0-1 conference mark and a 14-4-3 overall record.

Evans led the Rose offense this season, leading the team in goals and points. The junior forward scored 10 goals to lead the Engineer offense that ranked second in the HCAC in scoring with 40 goals this season. His 10 goals and 22 points scored this season ranked him second in the league. In conference games, Evans led the conference with six goals and ranked second with 14 points scored in eight matches. The Engineers advanced to the NCAA Division III men's soccer playoffs for the first time in school history after earning the conference's automatic bid by defeating Transylvania 1-0 in the conference tournament championship game. Rose will travel to Loras College in Dubuque , Iowa to face Dominican ( Ill. ) in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday night.

Rose-Hulman's Clint Vatterrodt (Bloomington , Ill. /University) has been selected as the 2008 HCAC Freshman of the Year. Vatterrodt, a midfielder for the Engineers, was third on the team with six goals and 17 points scored this season. The freshman led the squad with five assists during the season. He led the conference with four assists during conference action and contributed three goals and 10 points during the HCAC schedule. Vatterrodt helped the Engineers earn their first men's soccer championship and berth into the NCAA tournament.

Rose-Hulman's Sean Helliwell has been named the 2008 HCAC Coach of the Year. Helliwell earns his first HCAC Coach of the Year honor in his first year as head man of the Engineers. He led Rose to a 14-4-3 record, including the school's first ever HCAC championship and berth into the NCAA tournament.

Sixteen players join Evans as All-HCAC First Team members. Those players include Anderson's Peter Boberg (Sr., Algonquin, Ill.), Bluffton's Nate Flath (Sr., Wadsworth, Ohio) and Jacob Graham (So., Gomer, Ohio), Franklin's Michael Harwood (Sr., South Bend, Ind.), Hanover's Ben Spain (Sr., Richmond, Ky.), Manchester's Chris Rowe (Sr., Belleville, Mich.), Ben Cole (Fr., Westfield, Ind.) and Brian Woods (Jr., Carmel, Ind.), Rose-Hulman's Trevor Miller (Sr., Okemos, Mich. ), Corbin Clow (So., Martinsville, Ind.), John Hollingshead (Jr., St. Peter's, Mo.) and Isaac Heyveld (Sr., Peoria, Ill.), and Transylvania's Stu Hampson (So., Lexington , Ky. ), Ryan Wood (Sr., Versailles , Ky. ), Pierre Manga (Fr., Lexington, Ky.), and Corey Dillow (Sr., Greenup, Ky.).
