Franklin Women Post First HCAC Cross Country Title

N. MANCHESTER , IN - Franklin College 's women's cross country team picked up its first Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship on November 1 at Manchester College . The Grizzlies posted a score of 45 to hold off Manchester (49 pts) in the team standings. Four Franklin runners finished in the top twelve individually to help pace the team.
Leading the way for the Grizzlies was sophomore Heather Waterman (Shelbyville , Ind. ). Waterman finished fourth, finishing the 6K course in a time of 24:01. Rose-Hulman's Melissa Rogers (Crawfordsville , Ind. ) won the meet in a time of 23:32, finishing 20 seconds faster than Manchester 's Jessica Bremer (Howe , Ind. ) . Rogers was named HCAC Most Valuable Player for her efforts.
Anderson University 's Candace DeLong (Anderson , Ind. ) was named Freshman of the Year after finishing eight with a time of 24:21.6.
Anderson placed third as a team with a score of 77 and was followed by Rose-Hulman (115), Hanover (126), Mount St. Joseph (172), Transylvania (179), Defiance (198), and Bluffton (252).
Rogers , Waterman, Bremer, and DeLong were all recognized as All-HCAC. The recognition is given to the top 12 finishers. Joining the group were Rose-Hulman's Susan Nickol (Solon, Ohio ), Franklin 's Kristi Brown (Muncie , Ind. ), Lauren Patterson (Greenwood, Ind.), and Shannon Egold (Cloverdale, Ind.), Anderson's Kristen Reiff (Converse, Ind.) and Mollie Ringer (Kent City, Mich.), and Manchester's Katherine Pea (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) and Tiffany Alva (Medaryville, Ind.).
Franklin head coach Paul Sargent was named HCAC Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading Franklin to the women's title.
