Volleyball Squads Prepare to Play for a Cause
September 24, 2008
GREENWOOD , IN - As the 2008 women's volleyball season heads into conference action, many of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference school's turn their attention to a more important matter. During September and October, all nine HCAC schools will take part in a "Dig for a Cure" Night to help raise funds benefiting the Susan G. Komen foundation for breast cancer research or local foundations.
Bluffton University was the first HCAC school to hold an event this season as the Beavers played host to Oberlin on September 10. The two schools raised over $2,400 for cancer research during the event.
Transylvania University will be next to host an event to benefit cancer research, as the Pioneers will hold a tri-match with Anderson and St. Catherine on September 27. There will be a Susan G. Komen breast cancer walk before the matches and each team will wear pink ribbons during the contests.
October will be a busy month for the cause as four different events will be held during HCAC conference matches.
Rose-Hulman will hold a "Rose-Hulman Volleyball vs. Cancer" night as part of the promotion in a match against Franklin on October 7. Proceeds from the event will be donated along with other items to the Wabash Valley Breast Cancer Survivors Organization.
Manchester College will hold their event on October 12 as Rose-Hulman comes to town for a conference match. The players are working together to collect donations for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and will include the promotion as part of the school's homecoming activities. The volleyball team and cross country squad will have information booths at the soccer and football games on campus, giving out breast cancer awareness brochures and collecting more donations for the cause.
Hanover and Mount St. Joseph will team together for their conference match in Cincinnati on October 28. The Lions are working with "Chicks and Chucks", a local charity that assists women diagnosed with breast cancer that do not have insurance to pay medical bills. The donations will be pledged on a per dig basis, as each donation will be based on how many digs are recorded during the match.
Defiance will hold its "Dig for the Cure" event on October 26 against Rose-Hulman.
Dig for the Cure began in the fall of 2003 when Lisa Martson, the head coach at the University of Charlotte , sought to combine her volleyball program's community service project with a company that helped her mother and others like her to survive - the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Coach Martson established the Dig for the Cure with just her program. In following years, schools in her conference also participated in the program. Word continued to spread and the effort has grown from her sole Division I program in 2003 to more than 90 programs across the country in all divisions and high schools.
